Solid Waste Projects (Sanitary Landfills)
Bismil Solid Waste Sanitary Landfill is designed to dispose the domestic and medical solid wastes of Bismil Municipality until 2025. The landfill area consists of 2 lots. The capacity of 1st Lot serving the population of 174.000 until 2015 is 267.808 m3. Lot 2 will have the capacity of 611.165 m3 which is estimated to fulfill the requirements of the population of 258.800.
The design of sanitary landfill is carried out in accordance with Turkish Legislations. The lining system for bottom and slopes is made up of natural clay layer, 2 mm HDPE flexible membrane and geotextile. The leachate collection system consists of HDPE perforated pipes having diameter of min 250 mm. The leachate will be collected in a pond and then will be recycled to the top of dump.
The Sanitary Landfill Area will have also some necessary operation units, which are listed as follows:
• Weighbridges
• Wheel Cleaner
• Administration building
• Garage and Workshop
• Transformer and Generator
• Water Storage Tank for fire fighting
• SW Recycle plant (Civic waste facility)
• Ground water Monitoring Wells
• Surface water Controlling Systems
Besides, TA is provided to the solid waste department of the Municipality. A new organization for solid waste disposal units is proposed and an operation manual is prepared. A workshop is organized in the Municipality and municipal staff is trained. In addition, in order to increase public awareness for the reuse of recycling wastes, a campaign is organized throughout the city, posters and brochures are prepared and especially students are informed.
ASTM D 5231 – 92 (Standard Test Method for Determination of the Composition of Unprocessed Municipal Solid Waste) is used as test method of Solid Waste Composition Determination studies executed the scope of Bismil Recycling Project.
In addition to the services explained above, a technical seminar is organized in the scope of the project and the related staffs of Bismil Municipality and other Municipalities located in the Southeastern Anatolia visit the successfully operating sanitary landfills in the Western Turkey. In this seminar, the landfill operators, university professors, specialized on Solid Waste Management, provided training courses to attendants.
