Solid Waste Projects (Sanitary Landfills)
The integrated project consisting “İzmit Clinical and Hazardous Waste Incineration and Power Production Plant, İzmit Eastern Part Domestic and Industrial Wastewater Treatment Plant, Industrial Waste and Domestic Solid Waste Sanitary Landfill, Wastewater Interceptor” is a comprehensive project. The following summarized services related with the solid waste sanitary landfill system of this integrated project has been performed by ER-GE.
- Basic data
Topographical, geological, accessibility, meteorological and hydrological data of approximately 30 ha. storage area have been investigated.
- Basic studies
Present population and projected population for İzmit and neighbouring settlements for 15 years and the solid waste quantities according to these populations have been calculated.
- Storage capacity and project objectives
According to the solid waste volumes projected for İzmit and neighbouring settlements in the district, to meet the sanitary landfill requirements for the domestic solid wastes to be produced within 15 years, a sanitary landfill with 4 million m3 capacity has been planned to be implemented in two stages. Also a separate landfill area in capacity of 705.000 m3 has been provided to store the non-hazardous industrial wastes and the slag produced from the toxic waste incineration plant to meet the requirements for 100 years.
- Landfill design
Economical parameters have been taken as dominant factor for the system design. In order to achieve maximum volume of storage with minimum excavation and backfill, to eliminate negative impacts to the environment due to long term open storage, to solve the leachate Economical parameters have been taken as dominant factor for the system design. In order to achieve maximum volume of storage with minimum excavation and backfill, to eliminate negative impacts to the environment due to long term open storage, to solve the leachate drainage and disposal system in optimum way and considering topographical conditions in the landfill area, landfill system has planned in 7 separate compartments (lots). 2 lots have been provided for industrial wastes and 5 lots for domestic wastes.
In order to have more safe sealing system and to minimize the environmental pollution risk, a thicker clay layer and geomembrane have been provided under the industrial waste storage area.
- System design for site roads
Two main entrance access road have been foreseen to the storage area and by taking 6m road width, 20 m minimum radius of curvature and widening at the junctions, the internal transportation has been designed.
- Storm and leachate water drainage
Precipitation, evaporation and solid waste decomposition, forming leachate, have been calculated. Solid waste storage area has been located on a very steep hill and its slopes. Due to this topographical constraint 2 separate discharges from domestic solid wastes and one discharge from industrial solid wastes for leachate have been designed
By considering the necessity of treatment of leachate due to its heavy pollution load and to keep the amount of water in minimum for treatment, only the leachate drainage of the lot which in use, has been planned to be transported to the existing industrial waste water treatment plant, storm water coming from drainage system of other empty lots are planned to be discharged out of the landfill body.
The leachate disposal system has been planned so that the domestic leachate would be retained and treated, industrial leachate would be stored in tanks and transported to the central industrial waste water treatment in İzmit.
