Solid Waste Projects (Sanitary Landfills)
Nizip Solid Waste Sanitary Landfill which consisting of 2 lots is designed to dispose the domestic and medical solid wastes of Nizip Municipality until year 2020. Lot 1 serving the population of 125.500 until 2015 will have the capacity of 407.855 m3. The capacity of 2nd Lot which will serve the population of 144.500 until 2020 is 259.973 m3.
In the design of sanitary landfill, Turkish Legislations are taken into consideration. The lining system for bottom and slopes is made up of GCL, 2 mm HDPE membrane and geotextile. The leachate collection system consists of HDPE perforated pipes having diameters between 163 mm – 409 mm. The leachate will be collected in a pond and will be recycled to the top of dump.
In the scope of the project, rehabilitation of existing wild dump area is considered and detail design of rehabilitation works has been undertaken.
In addition to the design studies, TA is provided to the solid waste department of the Municipality. A new organization for solid waste disposal units is proposed and an operation manual is prepared. A workshop is organized in the Municipality to train municipal staff. Also a campaign is organized throughout the city, posters and brochures were prepared and especially students were informed in order to increase public awareness for the reuse of recyclable wastes.
ASTM D 5231 – 92 (Standard Test Method for Determination of the Composition of Unprocessed Municipal Solid Waste) has been used as test method of Solid Waste Composition Determination studies executed in the scope of Nizip Recycling Project.
In the scope of the project, a technical seminar was also organized in the Western Turkey for the related staffs of not only Nizip Municipality but also the other Municipalities located in the Southeastern of Anatolia. The successfully operating sanitary landfills were visited. The landfill operators and university professors, specialized on Solid Waste Management, had lectures and offered training courses to the attendants.
