Total plant flow (m³/day) : 433537
Total equivalent population (person) : 1950920
Project: Adapazari Wastewater Treatment Plant, Main Collector and Rehabilitation of Cark Creek
Client : Adapazarı Metropolitan Municipality / Turkey
Description of The Work :

Three main objectives of the project:

  1. Treatment of the domestic wastewater and the domestic type pretreated industrial wastewater of Adapazarı city and 8 towns,
  2. Intercepting all the sewage inflows into the Çark Creek and designing sewage interceptors,
  3. Ensuring better flow conditions by arranging the bed and section of Çark creek, construction of side walk ways; recovering its recreational properties by creating the fair area, parking sites, artificial pool and lakes around it; demolishing the culverts and crossings preventing the flow and constructing new bridges.

The service area is a very wide and extensive environmental project covering not only the Adapazarı city, but also the neighboring municipalities.

Wastewater Treatment Plant:

The wastewater treatment plant is established on a land of approximately 35 hectare near to the Çark Creek. The extended aeration, a modification of the active sludge method, is used in the plant as the treatment process.

The wastewater treatment plant has been designed in two stages to biologically treat the domestic and domestic type industrial wastewater until the target year 2015 in the first stage and until 2030 in the second.

Design population: 1st stage 894,600 PE

                             2nd stage 1,950,920 PE

Design flow:     1st stage 198,800 m3/day

                       2nd stage 433,537 m3/day

Pollutant load: 1st stage 44,730 kgBOD5/day

  2nd stage 97,546 kgBOD5/day

Çark Creek Rehabilitation :

Çark creek, is an artificial watercourse discharging water of Sapanca Lake into the Sakarya river by passing through the urban residential area of Adapazarı. Through the sewerage network under construction and the collector line that has been constructed within this project, domestic and industrial wastewater discharge has been prevented and recreational value has been restored. In order for the Çark Creek to have appropriate flow conditions, the necessary bed and section arrangements through the 7,400 m route in the city center and construction of side roads foreseen in the development plan are covered in the project.

On this 7,400 m route, bridges preventing the flow conditions of Çark Creek were demolished and pre-stressed bridges with reinforced concrete beams and with 10 m span were constructed, 3 of them being 12 m wide and 2 of them 18 m wide.

International Fair Area and Artificial Lake, Landscaping Arrangement:

Scope of this section consists of preparing the conceptual designs of Fair and Kültürpark facilities, topographic surveys of the artificial lake in this area, ground surveys, and preparation of implementation and detail designs and construction of architectural, civil, mechanical and electrical installations for filtration of lake water, conditioning, aeration, water jets and similar processes and piping and landscaping.

Main Collector:

The project scope has also covered construction of the collector line made of reinforced concrete pipes with dia. Ø 2400 mm and length of 4,000 m in total, from the manhole no K.44 to the inlet pumping station of the treatment plant, indicated in the implementation design prepared by Iller Bank.

Interceptors:

To prevent wastewater being discharged directly to the Çark Creek previously, total 15,996 m long Çark Creek interceptors were constructed including 797m - Ø1600mm, 1,814m - Ø1400mm, 6,121m - Ø1200mm, 2,225m - Ø500mm, 3,083m - Ø400mm and 1,236m - Ø300mm diameters given in the implementation design.

PROJECT PRICE AND FINANCING

The total price of the project described above is DM 223,807,009; construction price being DM 184.647.619; Consulting Services, expropriation, treatment system, maintenance and repairs, machinery and equipment park price DM 15,155,200 in total, and unforeseeable costs DM 24,004,190, and foreign credit was provided for all (DM stands for Deutsche Mark).

PROJECT DURATION

The project contract was signed between the Adapazarı Municipality and Metiş - Balfour Beatty - Preussag Noell Wassertechnik Consortium by the notary public in 4.07.1997, and approved by the Audit Office in 4.08.1997.

Starting date of the work was 4.08.1997, and completion date 4.08.1999, and the duration was 24 months. Starting and completion dates of the operation and maintenance period were 4.08.1999 and 4.08.2000, respectively with duration of 12 months. Due to the earthquake in 17.08.1999, temporary acceptance was made in 18.02.2000. Final Acceptance was planned by the end of 2003.

A Professional Supervision services contract was signed with ER-GE in 29.7.1997 to supervise the construction works of the Contractor on behalf of the Municipality, and the service period is 24 months. Service period was extended to 2003 because of the earthquake.
