Description of The Work :

Water Treatment Plant Extension;

Raw water is taken through the water intake structure and pumping station from the Porsuk River to the existing treatment plants of the city. The river is polluted with industrial wastes and agricultural materials carried by the stormwater.

The existing water treatment system includes 8 flat bottom clarifiers, 12 single layer rapid sand filters, chlorine gas disinfection, chlorination tank and treatment plant for storage of treated water, and pumping and distribution of water. Since it is not possible to remove nitrogen compounds and other pollutants with the existing plant, addition of advanced technology treatment units has been planned. Initially, the reserve osmosis system was selected for this purpose, and a feasibility study and preliminary design were prepared for this system. Capacity of the extension planned to be made by using advanced treatment units is 192,000 m3/day, and design of a system was planned, which would remove the nitrogen compounds, pesticides, THM and algae toxins and improve the water quality to European Community EV/80/778/EEC-July 98 standards.

However, when the nitrogen compounds were decreased in the Porsuk River after the shut down of the ammonia unit of Kütahya Nitrogen Factory, the idea of reverse osmosis system was abandoned the extension project was reconsidered; ozone and active granular carbon units were proposed to reduce only THM (cancerous organic compounds) and agricultural pesticides in the raw water, and the feasibility studies and tender designs were prepared again. Under the project scope, tender designs as well as tender documents for a tender with international funding have been completed.

For improving the hydraulic conditions of 7.5 km city section of the Porsuk river, being the potable water source, and for landscaping, Porsuk river rehabilitation design has also been prepared.

Kalabak Spring Water Transmission Line;

The Kalabak spring water plant, constructed 70 years ago, had outlived its technical and economical life and the existing transmission line is of cast iron with dia. Ø 200 mm.

Extension of the system is planned with a new transmission line, including the Göl Pınarı source as well as the Kalabak spring, extension of the existing bottling plant, new blow-mould bottle plant, new bottling line and construction of a 3 000 m3 reservoir.

Improvements required in the existing water intake structures of the Kalabak spring and construction of a new intake structure in the Göl Pınarı source were planned in the project. Also in the project scope, connections were planned to the main pipeline for the 30 lt/sec flow from the Kalabak spring through a 10 km line with dia. Ø 200 mm and for the 10 lt/s flow from the Göl Pınarı intake structure through a 16 km branch with dia. Ø 150 mm. The main transmission line foreseen will be of ductile iron pipes with dia. Ø 300 mm, with pressure of 16 bar, 50 km long and with 40 lt/sec capacity in total.
